How to use these pages

Counting grows in a clear order. Preschool and kindergarten children count small groups of things, touching each one once, and learn that the last number they say is how many there are. Then they write the numbers to 10 and to 20, count on from any number, and count to 100 by ones and by tens. In first grade they skip count by 2s, 5s and 10s, which is the start of times tables and of counting money. In second grade they learn which numbers are even and which are odd, and skip count by 3s and 4s.

These sheets follow that order. Start with count and write 1 to 10, count and circle and 11 to 20, then counting to 100 and before, after and between. Skip counting has a sheet each for 2s, 5s, 10s, 3s and 4s, plus a maze. For even and odd numbers, start with pairs of pictures, then sort the numbers and color the even numbers.

Frequently asked questions

Are these counting worksheets free?

Yes. Every counting worksheet is free to print for home, home school and classroom use, with no sign-up. Each one has a PDF for US Letter and A4 and an ink-saver version.

Do the worksheets have answer keys?

Yes. Every worksheet has its answer key on page 2 of the PDF, and “Show solution” shows the answers on screen.

What is skip counting?

Skip counting is counting forward by the same number each time: by 2s (2, 4, 6, 8), by 5s (5, 10, 15) or by 10s (10, 20, 30). It makes counting big groups quicker and is the first step to times tables and counting coins.

How do you teach even and odd numbers?

Use pairs. Put out a number of counters and pair them up: if every counter has a partner the number is even, and if one is left over it is odd. Then look at the last digit: even numbers end in 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8, odd numbers in 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9.

What age are counting worksheets for?

Count and write 1 to 10 suits preschool, pre-K and kindergarten (ages 4 to 6). Counting to 100 and skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s suit kindergarten and first grade, and even and odd numbers and skip counting by 3s and 4s suit second grade.

Is there a PDF to print?

Yes. Every page has free PDF downloads for US Letter and A4 paper, with the picture centered inside print-safe margins. Choose "Download PDF (Letter)" or "Download PDF (A4)" on the page and print at 100% (actual size).
