Eight rows of circles, squares or triangles, from three to ten in a group, with some of them shaded. The whole is now a group of things instead of one shape: in a row of eight circles with five shaded, five eighths of the group is shaded. Children count the group for the bottom number and the shaded ones for the top. It prepares them for questions like “what is one third of 12?”.

Tips for this fraction worksheet

  • Use real things: 8 crayons with 3 red ones is 3/8 red.
  • The bottom number is how many things in the whole group.
  • Try “what fraction is not shaded?” for each row too.

Page 2 of the PDF is the answer key. The fraction number lines show the same fractions as distances from 0 to 1. When this sheet feels easy, move on to the equivalent fractions and comparing fractions sheets. See all fraction worksheets.
