Twelve shapes split into halves, thirds or quarters, each with a fraction written underneath, such as 2/3 or 3/4. Children read the bottom number (how many equal parts there are) and check it against the shape, then shade as many parts as the top number says. It is the step from words to fraction notation in second grade, and the answer key on page 2 shows one right way to shade each shape.

Tips for this fraction worksheet
- Read the bottom number first: it must match the number of parts in the shape.
- Shade any parts you like: there is more than one right answer.
- Ask which is bigger, one third or one quarter, and why.
