Scorpion Solitaire: Free Online, Large Cards

Scorpion solitaire is played with one pack in seven columns: build four runs from King down to Ace, each in one suit, and each finished run leaves the table. Like Yukon, any face-up card can move with all the cards on top of it; like Spider, cards go only on the next higher card of the same suit. Ours is free, plays in your browser with no download or sign-up, and has large, clear cards with a “Larger print” button. Most Scorpion deals cannot be won, so we only offer the 366 deals our solver program has won, plus a deal of the day from the same list. Undo and Hint are unlimited.

How to play scorpion solitaire

  1. Build four runs, one per suit, each from King down to Ace. A finished run leaves the table by itself; finish all four to win.
  2. Put a card on the card exactly one higher of the same suit: the 6 of hearts on the 7 of hearts. Each card has only one place it can go.
  3. Any face-up card can move, and every card on top of it moves with it, in order or not.
  4. Only a King (with any cards on it) can go into an empty column. A face-down card turns over when nothing is left on it.
  5. The stock (top left) holds three cards. Tap it once, whenever you like, to deal them onto the first three columns.
  6. Tap a card to pick it up with the cards on it, then tap the column to put it on. Tap it again, or double-click it, to send it to the best place. You can also drag.
  7. Keyboard: arrow keys move between the piles, Enter picks up the bottom card (Up arrow adds the cards above it), Enter on another pile puts it there, Enter twice sends it to the best place, U undoes, Escape cancels.

    Scorpion solitaire tips and strategy

    • Every card has only one place it can go (the next higher card of its suit), so look for the move that uncovers a face-down card in the first four columns first.
    • Kings are the key cards: a King buried halfway down a column blocks everything under it. Free a column early so a King can move into it.
    • Keep the three stock cards back until the face-down cards in the first three columns are uncovered, so they don’t land on top of them.
    • Look for cards sitting on top of their own lower card (a 5 of spades covering the 4 of spades): that pair needs untangling and is usually the first thing to fix.
    • Undo is unlimited: Scorpion often needs a few tries to find the right order.

    Questions

Can every game of Scorpion be won?

Every deal we offer can. Not every Scorpion deal can be won, so our solver program played thousands of deals and we only use the 366 it won. Each has a number, so you can replay one or share it with a friend. Our solver won only about one deal in eight of those it tried, which is why a random Scorpion game so often gets stuck. If you get stuck, Undo is unlimited.

When should I deal the three stock cards?

Usually late: the three cards land on the first three columns and can bury cards you need. Deal them once the face-down cards in those columns are uncovered, or when you have no other useful move.

How is Scorpion different from Spider?

Spider uses two packs and only moves runs that are already in order. Scorpion uses one pack, builds only in suit, and lets you move any face-up card with whatever is on it, so it is more like Yukon. Try Spider solitaire or Yukon.

Is Scorpion solitaire good for seniors?

It was made with seniors in mind: big card numbers and suits, a “Larger print” button for even bigger cards, no time limit (the clock is only for your own record), unlimited undo, hints, a pause button and no pop-ups. Sound is off unless you turn it on.

Is it free? Do I need to sign up or download anything?

It is free and plays in your web browser on a computer, tablet or phone. There is nothing to download and no account. Your stats are kept in this browser only. A few adverts on the page, kept well away from the game, pay for the site.

Does it work on a tablet or phone?

Yes. Tap or drag with a finger on a tablet or phone, or use a mouse. It also plays with the keyboard alone (see “How to play”). Turn a phone sideways for more room.
