Thanksgiving trivia quiz tips and strategy

    • Play at the table in teams: kids against grown-ups, with a grown-up reading the questions to younger players.
    • Read all four answers before you choose: some wrong answers are other true facts (Canada’s Thanksgiving is in October, not November).
    • Choose 15 questions for a longer game; every question comes up once in a round.
    • Open the questions and answers list under the game afterwards and read the facts aloud: they make good dinner conversation.

Read them out at the table, or print this page.

Show all 16 questions and answers
    1. On which day is Thanksgiving in the United States? The fourth Thursday in November. It has been the fourth Thursday by law since 1941.
    2. When is Thanksgiving in Canada? The second Monday in October. Canada’s harvest comes earlier in the year.
    3. The 1621 harvest feast at Plymouth, often called the first Thanksgiving, was shared by the Pilgrims and which people? The Wampanoag. About 90 Wampanoag men came with their leader, Massasoit.
    4. About how long did that 1621 harvest feast last? Three days. A Pilgrim, Edward Winslow, wrote that it went on for three days.
    5. Which president made Thanksgiving a yearly national holiday in 1863? Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln proclaimed it during the Civil War.
    6. Which writer spent years asking presidents for a national Thanksgiving, and also wrote Mary Had a Little Lamb? Sarah Josepha Hale. She wrote letters for about 17 years before Lincoln agreed.
    7. The big Thanksgiving Day parade in New York City first marched in which year? 1924. The famous giant balloons first appeared in 1927.
    8. What is a male turkey called? A tom, or gobbler. Only males make the loud gobble call. A female turkey is a hen.
    9. What is a baby turkey called? A poult. Poults can walk and feed themselves within a day of hatching.
    10. What is the floppy red skin that hangs over a turkey’s beak called? A snood. The skin under its chin has another name: the wattle.
    11. Can wild turkeys fly? Yes, in short bursts, and they sleep in trees. Farm turkeys are often too heavy to fly, but wild ones can.
    12. Where do cranberries grow? On low vines in wet, sandy beds called bogs. At harvest, many bogs are flooded so the berries float to the top.
    13. Which of these foods first came from the Americas? Corn (maize). Pumpkins, squash, potatoes and turkeys also come from the Americas.
    14. Is a pumpkin a fruit or a vegetable, to a botanist? A fruit. It grows from a flower and holds the seeds, so botanists call it a fruit.
    15. In the wishbone game, two people pull the bone. Who gets to make a wish? The one left holding the bigger piece. The wishbone is a turkey’s collarbone.
    16. At the White House each November, what happens to the turkey the president pardons? It goes to live on a farm. The pardon has been a yearly ceremony since 1989.
