How to play jigsaw puzzles

  1. Pick a picture (or play today’s picture) and how many pieces you want.
  2. Drag a piece onto the board. When it is in the right place it clicks in and stays.
  3. Start with the corners and the edges: their straight sides go on the outside. The faint picture on the board shows where things go; turn it off with “Faint picture” for a harder puzzle.
  4. Keyboard: Tab to a piece and press Enter to pick it up, move it with the arrow keys, Enter to put it down, Escape to put it back.

    Jigsaw puzzles tips and strategy

    • Do the four corners first, then the edges: their straight sides go on the outside.
    • Sort by colour: blue sky pieces, green grass pieces, and the bright middle of the picture.
    • Keep the faint picture on while your child learns; turn it off for a harder puzzle.
    • For a 3 year old, start with 4 pieces and name what is on each one (“here’s the cat’s ear!”). Move up a size once they finish without help.

Every picture is a free colour by number page: print it, colour it in, glue it to card and cut it into your own jigsaw. Our memory games and mazes print too.

    Questions

How many pieces should my child start with?

Most 3 year olds manage 4 big pieces, 4 to 5 year olds 9 to 16, and 6 to 8 year olds 25. Older children and grown-ups enjoy 36 or 64. On a phone, fewer pieces are easier because they are bigger.

Where do the pictures come from?

They are our own drawings: every picture is one of our free colour-by-number pages, coloured in. Use the link under the puzzle to print the same picture and colour it yourself, then cut it into a paper jigsaw.

    Is it safe for children?

Yes. There is no chat, no account, no in-game purchases and no links to other sites. Adverts on the page are non-personalised and sit below the game, away from where children tap.

    What is “Today’s game”?

A new picture every day, the same for everyone, so a class or a family can do the same puzzle. “New game” picks a random picture.

Is it free? Do I need to sign up or download anything?

It is free and plays in your web browser on a computer, tablet or phone. There is nothing to download and no account. Your stats are kept in this browser only. A few adverts on the page, kept well away from the game, pay for the site.

Does it work on a tablet or phone?

Yes. Tap or drag with a finger on a tablet or phone, or use a mouse. It also plays with the keyboard alone (see “How to play”). Turn a phone sideways for more room.
